Everyone complains about taxes, yet think about what would happen if there were no longer an income tax. In a 250-word essay, discuss the positive effects of an income tax, the negative effects, or both.

It hurts to look at a paycheck and see how much of it was taken out for income tax. That money could have paid some important bills. It is easy to dream of doing away with the income tax and keeping all that money for ourselves.

If there were no income tax, however, the government would have a lot less to spend. The money we send to Washington seems to fall into a black hole and disappear. Actually, though, many people depend on it. The money pays the salaries of government employees, who provide services from drug control to highway building. It supports our military defense. Also, much of the money is returned to people in the form. of student loans, veterans" benefits, and payments to farmers, for example. The government has been working to cut its budget lately. With every cut, someone complains loudly.

So if the income tax were eliminated, other taxes would have to make up for it. Paying those other taxes would also hurt. Sales taxes fall most heavily on poor people. Taxes on manufacturers only result in higher prices to consumers.

Income taxes are not fun to pay. But doing without them would be worse. In my opinion, income taxes should be made as fair as possible. Then we each must "bite the bullet" and do our share.

One’s materialistic happiness is dependant on one’s economic success, though not completely. Without a strong and steady economic background, one could never imagine an easy and simple life, let alone an affluent and luxurious one. If you aren’t able to afford a house, a car, or even a book, anybody would be horrified at the mere mention of this kind of life. Definitely, some people will feel happy right away if their basic demands for life are satisfied. However, we have to admit that these people still need to be successful materialistically to some degree.

On the other hand, one’s success in economy may not necessarily lead to one’s spiritual happiness. As we all know, money doesn’t get you everything and some even say that money is the root of all evils. One’s financial success may be built on the sacrifice of time, health and love, which are the three most essential elements of spiritual happiness. All of us are not new to this picture: a successful business man tasting loneliness alone with a broken heart.

  以我的观点,经济上的成功只是幸福的一个重要因素,但绝对不是唯一因素。尽管我们每一个人对于幸福有完全不同的理解,要幸福就要精神上和物质上都能得到满足。

In my point of view, one’s economic success is only one of the key factors of happiness, but never the only one. To be happy, one needs to be both spiritually and materially satisfied though each of us may have a totally different picture of happiness.

Nowadays there is more and more TV advertisement, and there is a lot of misinformation in some of these advertisements. Some people think that consumers have the right to know the correct information and that government should restrict the contents of these advertisements. What is your opinion?

No one can avoid being influenced by advertisements and advertising exerts a tremendous influence on us. Recently, there are people who are of the opinion that public has the right to know the correct information of the advertisements and government also should restrict the contents of these advertisements. Personally I agree with this opinion for the following reasons.

In the first instance, consumers have the right to know the correct information before deciding on whether to buy them. Advertisements are highly information that helps people to make choice before they go to buy what they need. If the advertisement exaggerates the products it also will persuade people into buying things, which they don’t really want.

Secondly, any misleading advertisements will lead to the marketing tricks, causing chaos in the market. Too many misleading advertisements are barrio to distinguishing between decent products or products of bad quality. His bread in truth is made with soy flour, while he advertises it as white bread. These misleading information causes illegal competition.

Last but not least, government should stipulate laws in consumers’ interests. According to the laws, advertisements must be truthful. If the advertisements mislead consumers, government can impose great fine on them to set a lesson.

In general, the role of advertisements is inevitable and undeniable. A good advertisement can be a bridge between business and consumers and helps keep business moving. So we need correct information and government also needs to restrict the contents of advertisements. Let misinformation of advertisements be far away from us.

The advent of com*r technology has shaped the landscape of many traditional industries, among which the public library is the one that has been unprecedentedly challenged.Although the concern and worry for fading dominance of library is not unwarranted,I still believe the maintenance of public libraries is necessary.

Libraries, though not so easily accessible as the digital books backed by the com*r technology, can create an atmosphere which can sooth readers and then make them more concentrate on reading and studying. The piles of books, ranging from literature ones such as novels, poems and proses to the non-literature counterparts such as encyclopedias, history books and so on will give readers a sense of solemn and they are likely to treat reading as a holy baptism stimulating their cognitive development. In comparison, when readers get some information by e-books,they may regard it as a spiritual fast food, thereby absorbing little but to idle away time.

Another point for continue to run public libraries is that the functions of libraries is not restricted to do some readings; instead,it is now a multi-functional complex in which the visitors can attend an academic lecture, exchange opinions on some issues with participants in some seminars or receive some professional training and education. This experience can hardly be obtained through some e-books or online courses, which may mainly focus on the presentation of knowledge itself rather than the communication of those who are engaged in it.

Of course, cost of the maintenance of public libraries is one point that undermines the predominance of them.In the virtual digital world , cost can be reduced because of less spending on personnel and premises, making the price of some e-books more seductive.Easy access to abundant resources is also magnetic to some readers, especially who need to keep pace with the latest information.

In conclusion, public libraries still our attention and effort to maintain its operation,in spite of the rising importance of digital libraries.

As international media companies expand across the world, the growing popularity and uniformity of some media programs (such as TV shows, movies, fashion shows) is causing worldwide concern. Many people have strong views toward this trend. In my opinion, international media is closely linked to cultural globalization and cultural homogeneity.

The dominance of international media is a sign of Western cultural imperialism and has the potential to thwart cultural diversity. It is not a secret that international media is owned and operated by a handful of giant corporations, such as Time Warner. They control large sectors of the media market and place national media companies at risk. The contraction in the number of media owners will cause a proportional reduction, in the variety of programs broadcasted. For example, painting, music and movies accessible in the media have a small number of genres, imposing restraints on one"s knowledge of artworks of different cultural backgrounds.

In addition to seizing control over those creative industries, global entertainment companies affect cultural diversity by reshaping the perceptions, beliefs and norms of ordinary citizens in different countries. Most of the cultural values and ideals promoted by the leading mainstream media are of American origin. American culture values individuality, maximization of one"s benefits and material wealth, rather than communal life and family solidarity, the values and norms previously treasured in" many Asian countries. Unfortunately, many Asian people now imitate American people, causing the alteration of their perceptions of family. This radical change can be attributed to those movies and TV programs that portray the success of American individuals or corporations.

The loss of media diversity is also responsible for people"s narrow sense of ways of life. The ruling class of many countries speaks English, favors Western food, wears Western-style jackets and even prefers Western weddings. Young people are captivated by American basketball and some even daubing the names of NBA stars on their school sweatsuits. All these transformations in life are the result of the audience"s exposure to Hollywood movies, TV shows and sports reports. The loss of media diversity will lead to degradation of culture and to a minimization of cultural diversity. It is a worrying trend, as people need cultural diversity to preserve and pass on their valuable heritage to future generations, including lifestyle.

As shown above, international media, controlled by a handful of transnational media corporations, is exporting Western culture worldwide and putting many indigenous cultures at the risk of extinction. The uniformity of media programs has led to that of artworks, norms and ways of life wherever international media goes.

University graduates receive higher salaries than those who have a lower education. Therefore, some people say such students should pay for all their tuition fees. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

You should use your own ideas of knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Some people assert that government should be responsible for the full tuition of college students because they are the cream of society and contribute much to the society. This argument is true to some degree. Nevertheless, there are more reasons why university students should support themselves for the full tuition of their tertiary education.

First of all, it can ensure the quality of college education. Compared with the elementary and secondary education, the college education is operating in a quite different system, which covers a great variety of researching fields and involves numerous distinguished professors and projects. In other words, it needs a great sum of money. If this complicated system is supported by the nation without much income from the beneficiaries (the college students), it will exert very heavy pressure on the country’s economy. If the government is unable to invest enough money on university education because of the limited budget, the quality of education will be undermined.

In the second place, it is a quite fair practice. Most of the countries in the world are supporting the elementary and secondary education, which is reasonable since the citizens should be encouraged to receive basic education and which is advantageous for the development of the nation. However, it is unnecessary that all the citizens go to colleges. Some high school leavers give up their further study because they have their own life aim. That is to say, going to university is a totally personal choice. Therefore it is not unreasonable that the people who make such choice pay for it.

From the above views, I hold the opinion that college students should pay for the full tuition, which can both guarantee the quality of higher education and be a reasonable practice.

  international tourism

Nowadays, international tourism is the biggest industry in the world. Unfortunately, international tourism creates tension rather than understanding between people from different cultures. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

International tourism is booming: millions of tourists go to other countries to explore the outside world. Tourism enhances the mutual understanding between the local people and tourists. Some people hold opposite opinions. They think that international tourism causes tension rather than promoting understanding between people from different cultures.

The people holding the latter view suppose that tourists are likely to offend the local people because of the lack of knowledge of the local customs, which differ from their own. Moreover, tourism inevitably harms the natural resources and the cultural legacy, which may lead to the resentment of the local people.

However, I can hardly assent to this idea: the above mentioned rarely happens. In my opinion, international tourism does encourage the understanding between people from different countries. For one thing, without going to see for themselves, people may never know what other countries are really like and thus can be misled by hearsay or films and TV programmes, which, more often than not, are one-sided. For instance, one of my American friends told me that most Americans had a strange bias against the Russian people until some young Americans traveled to Russia and saw with their own eyes that the Russians are human beings just like them. Another example is that, with the development of Chinese tourism, people outside China start to realize that Chinese men no longer have long braids and Chinese women’s feet are of normal size now. Secondly, having seen the fine scenery or experienced the rich culture of other countries, tourists will have the desire to develop a good relationship with the locals, which certainly contributes to the understanding between them.

In conclusion, instead of causing tension, international tourism furthers the understanding of people from different countries.

11月19日雅思写作真题1

In recent years, living alone has become increasingly normal around the world, especially in those major cities. There could be several reasons why this is the case, and I believe that it has both positive and negative effects on our society.

There are various reasons why many people choose to live by themselves. Firstly, because of urbanization and globalization, a growing number of people of working age have to live in cities far away from their hometown, especially those who just graduate from universities. As they d not want t disturb or be disturbed by their parents, they prefer to live by themselves. Besides, the increasing awareness of independence may also have an impact on the choice of how to live. In addition, the convenient transport, such as railway and airplane and technology like mobile phones could meet the demand for contacting with our family members and friends both physically and emotionally, which provides the possibility for us to live on our own.

In my view, the rapid increase in the number of one person households has both beneficial and detrimental effects on our community. From the perspective of economy, the trend of living individually could lead to the increasing demand of housing, which could boost construction industry, real estate, bank and other related industries which provide services and products for homeowners. On the other hand, people living along for a long time might suffer from depression and feel isolated since they lack a sense of community, which is not good for neighborliness.

In conclusion, on the societal level, living by oneself can have both positive and negative influence.

11月19日雅思写作真题2

Today, more and more people, especially in developed countries, choose to live alone. Some even go so far as living all by themselves even if they have a spouse. Obviously, the benefits of living alone are multiple: freedom to come and go as you please; the space and solitude all to yourself; kingly or queenly domain over the bed. However, as far as I see it, all these benefits do not come without prices.

To begin with, as TV has taught us once and again, the single-occupant home can be a breeding ground for eccentricities. In a sense, living alone represents the self let loose. In the absence of anybody else and his/her watchful eyes, the solo dweller is free to indulge his or her odd habits: no dish washing after dinner, standing naked in your kitchen at 2 a.m., eating peanut butter from the jar, and so on. You may do these things again and again until it is too late for you to make a change.

Then, for people who are comfortable and even good at living alone, there is often another concern: a fear that the concrete has set, so to speak, on their domestic habits and that it will be difficult to go back to living with someone else. A friend of mine got married after having been single and living by himself for many years, only to find that he was always quarreling with his wife because, in his words, she was constantly picking faults with his habits and lifestyle. It is only a long time later that he realized he had to give up those oddities he picked up when he was living alone.

It is, of course, a matter of personal preference whether one chooses to live all by himself or with his friends or family members. If he finds freedom more important than anything else, living alone is certainly a good choice. It would be the best choice of his if he understood how to avoid the perils, too.

11月19日雅思写作真题3

In the current era, there is a phenomenon that the public prefer to dwell separately rather than reside together. This essay may examine the possible reasons and potential effects to the society.

To begin with, a stronger sense of privacy may lead to the tendency of living individually. In the past when people lived with relatives together, their personal lives might be interrupted by others easily. However, the public may raise their awareness of privacy and moving out of the big house in the past may be their priority. Then, they could better enjoy their personal lives since they are free to make their schedules.

In addition, single person households may arise from technological progress to some degree. Decades ago, when letter writing was the only choice for communication, people might choose to live together to avoid inconvenience caused by long-distance information exchange. However, current technology enables individuals to chat online even if they are far away from each other. Then, people could select any place to live alone since Internet makes people stayed connected, but not isolated.

In terms of the influence on society, social relationships may not be maintained. Taking family members as an example, even if they could communicate through iPhone or other devices, inevitably, they may have fewer and fewer face-to-face activities together. Then, the emotional tie among family members may not be strengthened since they are accustomed to living on their own, not to mention the relationship among friends who do not get in touch frequently.

In sum, the notion of protecting privacy and technology advancement may account for why individuals intend to dwell by themselves. As for the influence, social bonding may not be so tight anymore.

——5-8月雅思口语考试模拟预测试题3篇

5-8月雅思口语考试模拟预测试题1

  1.Where is your hometown?

My hometown is on the south-east coast of Northern Ireland. It’s called Dundrum and it’s about 1 hour south of the capital city.

2.What do you like about it?

It’s an area of outstanding natural beauty and for me, one of the most beautiful places of earth. It has everything; fantastic beaches, rolling mountains, dense forests and picturesque countryside.

3.What do you not like about it?

It can be a little bit boring because it’s really tiny. There are only a few small shops and a couple of pubs and that’s it! In the summer, it’s OK because you can enjoy the outdoors but it would be nice to have a few more indoor facilities for the winter.

4.How often do you visit your hometown?

Not as much as I should. I only get to visit about once a year now to see my family because I’m really busy with work and it’s quite far away, but I hope to visit more in the future.

5.What’s the oldest part of your hometown?

There is an old Norman castle that sits on top of the highest hill of the town. It’s a ruin now, but there are some breathtaking views from it and it’s easy to see why they chose that site for a castle, because you can see for miles around.

6.Do many people visit your town?

Thousands of tourists visit every summer. They come from the capital city mostly to get away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy the peace and quiet. There are more and more international tourists visiting because lots of scenes from the TV show ‘Game of Thrones’ were shot just outside the village.

7.Is there any way your hometown could be made better?

As I said before, the best thing about the town is its rural beauty and you can’t really improve that. If I had to say something, it would be to improve the roads, they are in a terrible state and cause a few car accidents every year.

8.How has your hometown changed over the years?

Since I was a child the town has almost doubled in size and population. It used to consist of just one main street, but now there are many new housing developments and apartments next to the water. With all these new people moving in, it has changed the character of the town a little bit, people are not as friendly as before.

9.Are there good transportation links to your town?

The public transport system consists of just buses that pass through the town on an hourly basis. One bus goes north to the capital city which is really convenient if you need to do any shopping and the other bus goes south where you can switch buses and go across the border to the Republic of Ireland, so you could say we have international transport links which is not bad for a little town like ours.

10.Would you recommend the town to people with children?

Yes and no. It is obviously a great place to bring up kids because there are so many things for them to do like swim in the sea, play in the forest and run on the beach. However, the good schools are pretty far away and I remember having to get up really early every morning to catch a bus to school that was 20 miles away.

11.Is there much to do in your hometown?

Oh yes, there"s certainly lots to do there as it"s a fairly big city. If you like going out in the evening there are a lot of good restaurants and bars. If you prefer cultural activities there are museums and art galleries. But if you like nature there are lots of other things outside of the city which are easy to reach.

12.What are the people like in your hometown?

They are mostly quite friendly, but as with most big cities everyone is often busy so it may seem as if they are not interested in speaking or having a chat. But if you live there you know that most people are quite happy to have a chat if they have time and will help you if needed.

剑桥雅思写作Task2作文1

In many major cities of the world, you will find large public buildings, both new and old.

Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of such buildings. How important is it for a country to construct impressive public buildings when houses are want is really required?

  Model Answer:

A public building is a building that belongs in some way o the state. The number of public buildings in any town or village will depend on the size of that community and its needs. For example, you will usually find a town hall of some sort, a school and a place of worship at he least. In anger communities there will be a police station, law courts, a library and maybe a theatre funded by he state.

The desire to build impressive buildings is not new. The ancient cities of the Middle East and South America were designed with large public buildings to impress visitors and enemies and give a sense of pride. In modern times, outstanding public buildings still. create a great sense of local and national pride. They are what gives a city its character and they form asocial centre, a place where people like to meet.

However, some people argue that governments have constructed unnecessary, and sometimes ugly, buildings sim* to make themselves feel important. I tend to feel that such buildings may be a waste of public money but I am not sure we can claim that they prevent houses from being built, because these governments have often ensured that adequate housing was also available. Houses and public buildings can exist side by side.

The answer lies in finding ape right balance. We want o feel pride in our town, but we also want our citizens to have comfortable homes. It is hard to please everyone.

雅思考试8分作文1

Surveys show that more people get the news by watching television than by reading the newspaper. Think about whether TV news shows are adequate as a person"s only source of news. Write an essay of about 250 words that details your thoughts.

Television news shows are dramatic and interesting. Watching them is pleasant and does not require the effort of reading. If television did not cover the news, some people would know nothing about what is going on in the world.

However, television newscasters cover only the events that they have time for, and they prefer stories that include some dramatic pictures. Viewers are quickly bored with reporters who sit and talk into the camera. As a result, a complicated story is often cut short.

Newspapers and magazines do a better job of explaining complex events. They can include details, and a person with a special interest can take the time to read them. Others can stick to the headlines.

Reading allows more freedom of choice than television. The TV audience cannot decide which stories to watch. In broadcasting, "one size fits all". However, a person who reads newspapers and magazines can choose to spend time on business, sports, health, or the school board election, depending on special interests.

Television provides a useful glance at what"s happening. However, a person who has individual interests and who wants the whole story needs newspapers and magazines as well.

雅思考试8分作文2

For many years the nuclear family, consisting of father, mother, and children, was considered to be the normal family pattern in China"s society. Yet in many other cultures and in our own in the past, three generations--grandparents, parents, and children--often have lived together. What are the advantages and disadvantages of three generations living together? Give specific examples in a 250-word essay.

Three generations living together can have both financial and personal advantages. On the other hand, it can also have personal disadvantages.

In years past and today, three generations have probably lived together mostly out of economic necessity or advantage. Sometimes a young family moves in with the older generation because the husband and wife can"t afford a place of their own. Sometimes grandparents move in because they aren"t well enough or can"t afford to live alone anymore. Occasionally, grandparents come to take care of the children so both parents can work. In times past, and sometimes today, three generations have lived together because they all depended on the same farm or business.

Usually these arrangements do help solve financial and practical problems. Everyone has a roof over his or her head. Children and old people in need of care are likely to get it. Often a family can get ahead financially by sharing the work and the bills. In addition, a strong sense of family and of belonging can develop in everyone.

What may be harder to work out are questions of who"s in charge. If grandparents don"t let go of some authority, the middle generation is likely to resent it. On the other hand, ailing grandparents may force their children to be parents to them and to their own children as well. If parents and grandparents disagree on discipline, children may be confused or angry.

The personal disadvantages can be overcome. For three generations to live together successfully, everyone"s needs must be respected.
